A fire at a homeless encampment in downtown Barrie has left one person dead.

Barrie Police and Barrie Fire and Emergency Services responded to a call on Saturday morning around 10:30 a.m., about a blaze in the Milligan’s Pond area.

Barrie Police spokesperson Peter Leon told Barrie 360 that an unknown structure had caught fire.

Leon says crews were able to extinguish the flames, and a person was found dead at the scene - the cause of the fire is unknown.

The fire marshal was notified and is conducting an investigation.

According to Leon, the deceased will be moved to the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service where a post-mortem examination will take place to determine the cause of death.
