Sections of sanitary sewers will be tested by the City of Barrie using harmless fog on Monday and Tuesday, with notices being hand-delivered to impacted properties.
Fog testing is a way the City identifies sources of inflow (stormwater) and infiltration (groundwater) in the sanitary sewer system. The fog has no odour, is not harmful to health, and will disappear within a few minutes.
The City says information collected will help staff realize areas that need to be fixed to reduce excess water entering the wastewater system, preventing backups and maintaining reliable service.
During testing, a fog will be blown into the sanitary sewers and staff will monitor the streets above to document where the fog comes out, such as from catch basins or maintenance holes.
The Fire Department and Barrie Police Service have been notified of the testing schedule.
If weather is unfavourable, the City says the work will be rescheduled to the week of October 27.
