Barrie, it’s time to start your carts! On your regular waste collection day next week, roll your new carts to the curb by 7 a.m. If it’s your garbage week, set out both carts. If it’s not your garbage week, just set out the organics cart. For non-downtown properties, organics is collected weekly, and garbage every other week. You can start filling your new carts with waste after your last collection with your current containers.
Once cart collection begins, organics and garbage must be placed in the City-provided carts for collection. There is an exception for occasions when extra garbage won’t fit into the cart; you may set out bags with a garbage bag tag attached. Residential recycling is not managed by the City and will continue to be collected in blue and grey boxes. Yard waste collection will also continue as usual.
How to set out carts for collection (outside of the downtown BIA)
- Roll carts as close to the road as possible. Place them on a level surface on the boulevard or your driveway. Don’t block bike lanes or sidewalks.
- Give your carts space: leave 2 ft (0.6 m) between each cart and any obstacles like other waste material (other carts, recycling boxes or yard waste containers), parked cars, fences or trees. This gives the arms on the truck the room needed to pick up the carts.
- Ensure the arrows on the lid point toward the street, and that the lids are fully closed.
- Don’t overfill your cart.
If you have not received your carts, contact Service Barrie at 705-726-4242 or ServiceBarrie@barrie.ca. Property owners with two to five residential units can request additional sets of carts, within limits, by emailing Service Barrie with their property information, requested number of carts, and preferred garbage cart size for each set.
Carts are assigned to your property. They belong to the City and must stay with the assigned property, even if you move. Do not exchange carts with others.
After cart collection begins, look for ways to reuse your old garbage container and green bin. You can also recycle your old green bin at the landfill at no charge. The type of plastic that garbage containers are made of is not accepted for recycling (therefore disposal at the landfill carries a fee), but 100 per cent metal cans are accepted for free.
