A Barrie gym owner is on the road to becoming "Mr. Health and Fitness."
Dave Fraser, a 50-year-old bodybuilder a personal trainer, is competing in the magazine contest to win the title and $20 thousand U.S.
Fraser was bit by the fitness bug when he was 14 years old while working at a gym cleaning equipment.
"I loved the atmosphere and the people; everyone was positive, and it was eye-opening for me. I took my first course when I was seventeen, and I've been working with people on their health and lifestyle ever since."
Fraser says he decided to enter the contest as a new challenge and get him out of his comfort zone.
"I've dedicated my life to health and fitness, and I thought it would be cool and a dream of mine to be featured. To win this would blow my mind. If you don't go for things, you never get them."
He adds," it's also inspiring for people to see what you can do for your body when caring for yourself."
Fraser owns "Core Evolution Health and Fitness" in Barrie.
If he wins the $20 thousand, he plans to invest back into his business and pay off some debts.
"The last few years have been devastating for gyms by being closed. It was hard for me mentally and financially."
He explains, "It was hard for people too. There are so many facets of the gym. It's not just about looking good and being in shape; it's mental health, physical strength, and injury rehabilitation."
Fraser is currently in the first round of the competition that's based on fan votes. The next step is to make it to the top 15, then the top 5. The final results will be counted in June.
The voting process is quite easy by going to Mr. Health and Fitness magazine, and logging your vote here
