The City of Barrie is now accepting applications for the Conservation of Built Heritage Grant Program, offered through its Conservation of Built Heritage Community Improvement Plan (CIP).

Through the initiative, funding is provided to support property owners undertaking efforts in restoring and renovating heritage properties. Applications for the program will be accepted until April 1.

The grant aims to contribute up to 60 per cent of eligible costs (to a maximum of $10,000) for related necessary upgrades, energy efficiency improvements, and other eligible conservation work on heritage listed or designated properties.

"This plan is designed to support property owners in conserving listed and designated heritage properties, ensuring Barrie’s unique character endures for generations to come." the City said in a news release.

On the Municipal Heritage Register, properties that are deemed as (or potentially) important to the community for architectural, historical or contextual reasons are either defined as "listed" or "designated." Properties that are listed on the register have until January 1 to be designated, or risk removal from the register.

Currently, there are 18 properties designated on the register, and another 49 listed.
