Barrie police say the basement of a Tiffin Street home was flooded with about a foot of water following a break and enter.
Police say that around 2:30 Thursday afternoon they responded to a report of a break and enter to a residence where it was determined those responsible entered the home through a rear window, and that entry was gained sometime between 6 p.m. on Tuesday and 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Once those responsible were in the home, they went to an upstairs bathroom, forcibly removed a shower head and turned on the water, which flooded the basement of the residence.
An "overwhelming" smell of natural gas was also noticed throughout the home, police said, which dissipated after the gas supply was turned off.
Damage to the basement because of the flooding is considered extensive.
No arrests have been made.
Police remind the public that if they ever see a person who does not belong at or near a home or business to take note of their physical characteristics, clothing and any other noticeable details that may help to identify them and immediately call police.
"Remember, your observations may prevent a potential criminal occurrence from happening or by sharing what you have seen, you could be providing police with the information they are seeking in an ongoing investigation," police stated in a news release on Friday.
