City police charged a Barrie man following a fail-to-remain collision, and say they located suspected cocaine during the arrest.

On Tuesday, just before midnight, Barrie police were made aware of the crash at the Anne Street and Tiffin Street intersection.

"Upon arrival at the scene, police spoke with the driver of the involved motor vehicle who reported that he was stopped for a red traffic light at the intersection and was waiting to continue southbound on Anne St. A northbound vehicle reportedly failed to stop for the red light and drove towards the other car striking it on the passenger side which resulted in significant damage," police wrote in a release.

"The driver of the northbound motor vehicle engaged in a brief conversation with the other driver but fled the scene."

Police located the motorist a short distance away.

"Based upon observations that were made, [officers] placed him under arrest for Operation while impaired by drug," police continued.

"As he was being taken into custody, a small quantity of suspected cocaine was located, and he was further advised that he would be charged with Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance."

The 32-year-old man faces the following charges:

  • Fail to Stop After Accident
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance
  • Operation while impaired - drugs
  • Failure to comply with release order- other than to attend court
  • Failure to comply with a probation order

He was held for a bail hearing today.
