A 31-year-old man is in custody after Barrie police responded to a report of a carjacking on Monday morning.

Peter Leon, communications coordinator for the Barrie Police Service, told Barrie 360 the incident started around 10:10 on Eugenia Street - where he says the vehicle was taken at knifepoint - and concluded in the area of Penetanguishene Road and Cheltenham Road.

"We did locate the vehicle and made attempts to safely stop the vehicle ... the driver failed to do so," said Leon. "Eventually, the vehicle was stopped and the driver was taken into custody, and is currently under investigation at Barrie Police Headquarters."

Leon says a number of police cruisers were damaged while attempting to stop the vehicle.

"The individual's driving behaviour dictated a course of action that police were required to take necessary means to stop the vehicle."
