Barrie Police said Monday that remains found at Berczy Park are believed to be human.
Police said officers were called just before 1 p.m. on Friday after a worker in the area discovered bones in the downtown park located on Berczy Street.
The remains have been sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto for further analysis.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled for later today.
"As the investigation continues, both the east and west walking path entrances to Berczy Park remain closed to the public," police said in a news release.
The park is accessed from Peel Street in the area of Sophia Street East, and from Berczy Street in the area of Queen Street.
Police added that further updates will be released as they become available.
In September 2024, Berczy Park made headlines when the City of Barrie issued notices to about two dozen people who were living there in an encampment, which was eventually cleared by police and by-law officials.
At the time, the city cited infractions taking place at that location, including placing debris on city property in contravention of the nuisance by-law, fouling the land by urinating and defecating, and camping within a public park, contrary to the parks use by-law.
