The Barrie Police Marine Unit was deployed for the first time this season on Sunday after a report of a woman in distress on a paddleboard.
Marine officers went to the area of Minet's Point Park and saw a woman in the middle of the bay, being pulled farther out by strong currents, repeatedly falling into the water.
A witness told officers the woman had been struggling for more than two hours while attempting to kite surf.
Officers reached her a short time later and brought her safely back to shore.
The 28-year-old, who was visiting from Nova Scotia, was not injured, though she was exhausted. She declined medical attention after being checked over and was given a safety reminder before leaving.
"With the warmer weather upon us, Barrie Police remind residents and visitors to check weather and water conditions before heading out, ensure they have proper safety equipment, and entering the water alone, especially in unfamiliar lakes," police said in a news release.
