Barrie police seize replica firearm, 18 people arrested and 2 charged

Police responded in response to a call from a citizen

Barrie police converged on the Duckworth Plaza shortly before 2:30 Sunday afternoon in response to a citizen who reported someone in a vehicle waving a firearm.

When officers got to the scene in the area of Duckworth and Grove streets, police communcations co-ordinator Peter Leon told Barrie 360 that 18 people were detained.

He said there were people in at least four vehicles.

Pictures from the scene show a group of young men sitting on the pavement in handcuffs.

Once officers sorted things out, two men in their early 20's were taken to police headquarters and were charged with weapons dangerous.

The replica firearm was an air pistol.

The suspects, according to Leon, reside in Barrie but are not permanent residents.

He praised the citizen who called police to alert them about the possibility of a person with a firearm.
