Barrie police charge two boys following vandalism spree at a childcare centre

Police say equipment used by the kids was urinated and defecated on

Two boys, a 12 and a 13-year-old, have been charged with mischief under $5,000 after a vandalism spree at a south Barrie childcare centre.

Barrie police spokesperson Peter Leon tells Barrie 360 the incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11 at the Growing Minds Childcare Centre on Mapleview Drive West.

“These two individuals made their way into the fenced area and damaged some toys then proceeded to relieve themselves, both urination and defecation on the toys and some of the things that the kids would use to play on,” Leon said.

“That’s something we haven’t seen and don’t want to repeat anywhere in our community.”

He said the boys were arrested and charged after they turned up at the police station this past Saturday and spoke with the investigating officer.

Leon did not have a dollar figure in terms of damage to the equipment but noted under the circumstances they would be required to likely undergo a complete sanitization, so there is no issue or concern with respect to anything being transferred to the kids.

He told Barrie 360 that the charges are a criminal offence.

The boys have a court date on Sept. 20th.
