Barrie Police are reminding drivers to watch for deer as shorter days and increased wildlife activity make fall driving more dangerous.
Police say a 27-year-old man was not injured when his pickup truck hit a deer around 6:25 Thursday morning near Reid and McKay roads.
The deer died in the collision.
Police say deer are most active around dawn and dusk during October and November, and they often travel in groups.
Drivers are being urged to slow down, scan the roadside and use high beams when appropriate and when there’s no oncoming traffic.
If a deer suddenly enters the road, brake firmly if it’s safe to do so, and avoid swerving, which could cause you to lose control or collide with another vehicle.
Police also recommend keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and using your horn or flashing your headlights to try to warn the animal.
If you hit a deer, pull over somewhere safe and turn on your hazard lights. Don’t approach an injured animal, as it may be frightened and unpredictable.
Call 911 if there’s an immediate danger on the road. Otherwise, report the collision to Barrie Police at 705-725-7025.
