The City of Barrie is transitioning to automated cart collection for garbage and organic materials starting September 8, 2025. Automated collection is when the driver uses a mechanical arm on the side of the truck to lift and empty carts, without exiting the vehicle.

All residential properties in Barrie will automatically receive one small 120L organics cart and one large 240L garbage cart at no charge. Residential properties with up to five registered units are eligible to receive additional sets of carts (limits apply).

Now until March 31, Barrie property owners have the option to substitute the large garbage cart for a smaller 120L garbage cart at no charge.

Owners of properties with two to five residential units can also request additional sets of carts at no charge.

Requests can be made online at barrie.ca/CurbsideCollectionChanges, by calling Service Barrie at 705-726-4242 or in person at Service Barrie (1st floor City Hall).

Carts will be delivered to properties between June – August. A delivery schedule will be available in the spring.

If no request is made by March 31, 2025, residential properties will receive one 240L garbage cart and one 120L organics cart. After delivery, exchanges for a different size can be requested starting October 2025 (a $50 fee will apply).

Residential recycling carts will not be provided by the City of Barrie. Circular Materials will continue to manage residential recycling under the provincial Blue Box Regulation and recycling will continue to be collected in blue/grey boxes.

To help property owners decide what size garbage cart works best for their properties, garbage and organics carts are on display at the following City facilities until March 31:

  • City Hall (Service Barrie, 1st floor), 70 Collier Street
  • Allandale Recreation Centre, 190 Bayview Drive
  • East Bayfield Community Centre, 80 Livingstone Street East
  • Peggy Hill Team Community Centre, 171 Mapleton Avenue
  • Parkview Centre, 189 Blake Street
  • Barrie Public Library Downtown Branch, 60 Worsley Street
  • Barrie Public Library Painswick Branch, 48 Dean Avenue
  • Barrie Landfill & Environmental Centre, 272 Ferndale Drive North

With the City’s transition to carts comes a new waste collection program for business and institutional properties, including new waste collection limits effective September 8. Owners of business and institutional properties must register by March 31, if they wish to receive waste collection from the City of Barrie effective September 8.
