Barrie Fire is investigating a structure fire that started in the garage and spread inside the home at 210 Tunbridge Road where crews were called to at 7:50 am Wednesday.
Firefighters needed a defensive strategy to control the blaze and prevent the fire from spreading to the unit next door. According to Justin Gilbert, assistant deputy fire chief, the fire was knocked down quickly. However, the heavy flames and smoke caused extensive damage to both sides of the duplex home and destroyed the car parked in the driveway.
All ten occupants of the home evacuated safely from both the upper and lower dwellings of the home with no injuries reported. They were later sheltered in city buses that were brought in for those who were displaced.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, pending the investigation.
