Pride Month might be done and over with, but the City of Barrie is keeping Pride alive with the unveiling of its rainbow crosswalk.
City Hall says the job was done overnight; special plastic-based paint used to colour the crosswalk on Simcoe Street at Meridian Place with six different stripes.
The crosswalk was a hotly-debated subject when it came up at City Hall; while many around the council table supported the project, some wondered if it was an appropriate use of taxpayer funds. In the end, the $7,000 needed to pay for the project were raised privately, while the City contributed seven grand towards LGBTQ+ initiatives in Barrie.
