Give those unwanted items a second life by participating in Barrie's 'New to Me' Day

Oct. 1 is a chance for residents to place unwanted items, labelled “free” at the curb, for other residents and community members to browse and take for their own use

News release from the City of Barrie

A fall edition of the City of Barrie’s popular New to Me Day has been added in October, to help residents give unwanted items a second life. This event, taking place on Oct. 1, is a chance for residents to place unwanted items, labelled “free” at the curb, for other residents and community members to browse and take for their own use. New to Me Day is like a garage sale, but without the money or hassle.

Apart from finding things for free, you also benefit by cleaning your home of unwanted but useable items, while helping prolong the life of Barrie’s landfill. This helps support a circular economy, which is a movement toward greener, more sustainable options, by considering using items in new ways so they can be reused, and sharing things instead of throwing them out.

Participating in New to Me Day is as easy as 1-2-3:

  1. Gather up items around your home that are no longer used, but that other people might like to have (toys, books, furniture, sporting goods, small appliances, tools, art, etc.)
  2. On the morning of Saturday, October 1, put your items at the curb and add the New to Me Day poster (or make your own poster that reads “FREE”)
  3. Look for free treasures around your neighbourhood!

You can also share the items you have available by posting on the City's Facebook event page to show others what you're offering. If you find something great, share your haul on social media using #NewToMe!

New to Me runs from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on October 1. Anything that does not find a new home must be taken back in by 9 p.m. that day as there will be no special municipal collection. If residents need to get rid of items, they can visit barrie.ca/AlternativeOptions or barrie.ca/landfill for more information on how to properly do so.

New to Me Day happens twice per year in Barrie—in the spring and in the fall. For more information, visit barrie.ca/NewToMe.
