It got hot and sticky yesterday. Not hot enough for a heat warning here, but when one issued the City of Barrie will be sending garbage collection crews out earlier.
Collection in the city generally starts around 7 a.m., but moving forward, on days when Environment Canada has issued a heat warning, it will begin at 5:30 a.m. to ensure the safety of waste collection staff during extreme heat.
On those days, city officials ask that residents put their waste out for curbside collection the night before, any time after 7 p.m. or very early in the morning (before 5:30 a.m.) on collection day.
Heat warnings are issued when two or more consecutive days of daytime maximum temperatures are expected to reach 31° C or warmer and nighttime minimum temperatures are expected to fall to 20° C or warmer; or when two or more consecutive days of humidex values are expected to reach 40° C or higher.
