Barrie HomeShare is extending an invitation for a fun evening of cooking, comedy and community at its virtual HomeFeast on March 25. Participants will have the opportunity to cook, then share a meal together online.

“We’re encouraging anyone who’s feeling isolated or looking for a fun way to break bread with other community members to be our guest,” said Nicole Norris, Manager, Centre for Changemaking and Social Innovation at Georgian College. “The goal of HomeFeast is to connect adults 55+ with a Georgian student to cook a meal together online and participate in a community feast.”

Families or caregivers with parents or family members in the Barrie area who are 55 or older can order a meal kit and participate as a family. There are four delicious meal kit options: Salsa chicken and rice; chickpea and sweet potato curry; one dish beef and mushroom stroganoff; or a vegetarian sheet pan dinner.

The ready-to-go meal kits are being prepared by staff at Georgian's on-campus restaurant – The Last Class. The kits can be ordered online and either picked up at the Barrie Campus or delivered to your door if you live within the Barrie city limits. All meal kits cost $20 with proceeds going to the Georgian Food Locker, which supports students facing food insecurity. The deadline to order the meal kits is March 18.

“HomeFeast is more than just sharing a meal – it’s about connecting our city's diverse, differently-abled, and inter-generational members together in the spirit of community,” said Norris. “So, even if you’re not interested in ordering and cooking one of the meal kits you’re still invited to take part. We’re also able to accept pre-purchased meals kits as gifts to support community members in need.”

HomeFeast runs from 5 to 6 p.m. and participants are encouraged to cook their meal beforehand. The event will be hosted by local comedian Andrea Murray with musical entertainment provided by Owen Sound musician Kailey Hawkins.

You can order your ready-to-go meal kit and register online at EventBrite. If you have any questions about the HomeFeast or your meal kit, please reach out to ccsi@georgiancollege.ca.

Barrie HomeShare is an initiative out of Georgian’s Centre for Changemaking and Social Innovation, in partnership with the City of Barrie’s Office of the Mayor and supported by United Way Simcoe-Muskoka. It’s dedicated to helping adults 55+ and Georgian students connect, with the goal to support adults with help around things like technology or simple household chores, and empower students to feel better connected to their community through volunteerism and affordable housing, post-pandemic.
