Man plucked from chilly Georgian Bay after boat catches fire

Lone occupant of the vessel was taken to hospital

A man was in the cold water of Georgian Bay for a period of time on Wednesday afternoon after he was forced to abandon his powerboat that caught fire.

The Southern Georgian Bay OPP Marine Unit responded around 3:30 to a report by a Tiny Township resident of a vessel fire off the west side of Beausoleil Island south of Gin Rocks. Officers got there within 10 minutes and with the assistance of a private boater already on scene transported the lone male occupant of the vessel to the town dock in Midland.

He was triaged and transported to an area hospital for observation.

The mostly submerged boat is being removed by a marine salvage unit.

OPP say vessel operators are reminded that water temperatures are significantly colder now and should have survival equipment that matches the current and upcoming cooler temperatures. For more information, please view the following link- .
