Barrie police issue warning after recent catalytic converter thefts

Barrie police catalytic converter thefts

Barrie police say thieves are again stealing catalytic converters from parked vehicles in the community.

On Friday around 7 a.m., an employee of a business on Welham Road discovered that the catalytic converters of two work trucks had been stolen after they emitted a loud sound upon ignition. One of the trucks also had a tonneau cover that was damaged.

Officers released surveillance camera images of suspects and a suspect vehicle.

As well, another business owner in southwest Barrie had five catalytic converters stolen.

Contact police at 705-725-7025 ext. 2702 if you have any information.

"These thefts have left this business owner in a position where he is unable to operate his business as the work-related vehicles require repair and catalytic converter replacement before they can be safely driven again," officers said in a release.

Barrie police advise homeowners and business owners to park their vehicles indoors, in a secure compound, or in an area where video surveillance is in place. They also recommend using aftermarket devices such as a catalytic converter shield kit or applying bright-coloured high-temperature spray paint to the catalytic converter to help prevent theft.
