Why are catalytic converters such a hot target?

If you’ve never wondered why criminals target catalytic converters, you’re not alone — it’s not exactly the flashiest part of your vehicle.

But for thieves, it's a jackpot.

Catalytic converters contain precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium, which can fetch a hefty price on the black market. And since they’re located underneath your vehicle, they’re relatively easy (and quick) to steal — especially from trucks, vans, and SUVs with higher clearance.

So, what can you do to keep your vehicle safe? A lot, actually.

Best ways to prevent catalytic converter theft

The reality is, no one can make their vehicle 100% theft-proof—but you can make it a much tougher target.

Thieves typically look for the easiest score, so the more barriers you put in their way, the more likely they are to move on.

Here are some of the best (and most practical) ways to protect your catalytic converter and give yourself some peace of mind.

1. Park smart

Barrie police advise homeowners and business owners to park their vehicles indoors, in a secure compound, or in an area where video surveillance is in place.

This might sound simple, but it’s one of the easiest ways to protect your vehicle. If none of these are an option, look for well-lit areas. The more visible your vehicle is, the less appealing it is to thieves.

2. Install a catalytic converter shield or cage

Barrie police also recommend using aftermarket devices such as a catalytic converter shield kit. These devices are designed specifically for preventing catalytic converter theft and make it much harder and riskier for thieves to saw off your converter, which can be enough to make them move on.

3. Make it traceable (and less attractive)

Mark your catalytic converter with your vehicle identification number (VIN) or license plate number. This can help law enforcement trace stolen parts and discourage resale.

Another simple but surprisingly effective trick? Spray it with bright-colored, high-temperature paint. Scrap dealers may think twice before accepting a part that’s clearly been marked.

4. Use security cameras and alarms

If you’re parking at home or at your business, invest in a visible security camera system. You can also look into motion-sensitive car alarms that trigger if the vehicle is tilted or tampered with—great for catching thieves in the act.

5. Adjust your parking style

If you’re parking in a lot or driveway, try positioning your car close to a wall or another vehicle, with the exhaust side (where the catalytic converter is located) as blocked as possible. This makes it much harder for thieves to slide underneath.

6. Talk to your mechanic

Ask your mechanic if they recommend any additional anti-theft measures based on your specific vehicle type. Some cars are more commonly targeted than others, and your mechanic might have valuable insights or product recommendations.

What to do if your catalytic converter is stolen

If you discover your catalytic converter has been stolen (you'll be able to tell is there is a loud roaring noise when you start your vehicle) it’s important to act quickly. Here’s what to do:

  1. Contact the police. File a report with your local police department. Be sure to provide as many details as possible, including when and where you believe the theft occurred.
  2. Take photos. Document any damage to your vehicle, which can be helpful for both police and insurance claims.
  3. Call your insurance company. Notify your insurer right away to start the claims process. They’ll let you know what information is needed and what’s covered under your policy.
  4. Arrange for repairs. A mechanic will need to replace the stolen catalytic converter and repair any other damage caused during the theft.

Does car insurance cover catalytic converter theft?

Whether your catalytic converter theft is covered depends on the type of car insurance you have. Comprehensive coverage typically protects against theft and vandalism, which includes catalytic converter theft. However, basic liability coverage — required by law in Ontario — does not cover theft.

If you do have comprehensive coverage, keep in mind that you'll still need to pay your deductible, and the payout will depend on your policy limits. It’s a good idea to review your insurance policy or speak with your broker to make sure you’re fully covered in case this type of theft happens to you.

Stay one step ahead

Catalytic converter theft is a growing problem, but with the right precautions, you can significantly reduce your risk. A few smart steps now can save you time, money, and frustration down the road—so it’s worth making vehicle security a top priority.
