
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) laid more than 19,000 traffic and marine charges during Canada Day week as officers stepped up enforcement efforts on roads, trails and waterways across the province.
With increased traffic expected over the holiday period, OPP officers conducted enforcement initiatives aimed at improving safety and reducing risky behaviour. According to preliminary data, police issued more than 19,133 traffic and marine charges during the week.
The most common offence was speeding, with officers laying 8,603 speeding charges. Other significant enforcement results included:
- 1,454 seatbelt charges
- 412 impaired driving charges
- 311 stunt driving charges
- 243 distracted driving charges
- 49 helmet charges
- 11 marine safety equipment charges
The OPP reminded residents that safety remains a shared responsibility, regardless of how they travel.
Police also expressed appreciation to those who prioritized safe driving and responsible behaviour during the busy Canada Day travel period.
