A new but dangerous TikTok trend is putting school officials, fire departments, and even police on alert.

The latest stunt, dubbed the "#ChromeBookChallenge," encourages kids to jam metal objects, such as pushpins, into the charging ports of laptops and other handheld devices until it short circuits.

Not only is it a fire hazard, but the smoke emitted from the devices is toxic.

Kids doing the stunts try to capture it on video and upload it for an unknown reason.

A school in Newington, Connecticut, was recently evacuated after one student's laptop spewed toxic smoke mid-class.

It's hardly the only school to have the issue, though, as schools across the US have reported the same knucklehead move by students.

Authorities are taking the acts seriously. In New Jersey, a 15-year-old is facing charges after allegedly causing damage to school property after it's believed he was participating in the prank.

In addition to setting the Chromebooks on fire, another trend has them test their durability.

Dubbed the "#ChromebookDurabilityTest," students intentionally destroy their devices on school property to see how much abuse they can take.
