The Town of Collingwood is turning to the community for ideas on how to shape the future of one of its most recognizable downtown landmarks.
Municipal officials have launched a public engagement process inviting residents, businesses, community organizations, and stakeholders to share their vision for the historic federal building at 44 Hurontario Street. The initiative comes as the Town considers purchasing the property, which is currently occupied by Service Canada.
A rare opportunity to reimagine a historic space
Town leaders say the consultation is intended to be an open and creative brainstorming exercise, encouraging participants to think beyond conventional uses while still respecting the building’s heritage.
“This is a rare and exciting opportunity to imagine the future of one of Collingwood's most iconic buildings,” said Mayor Yvonne Hamlin. “We know our community is full of creative ideas, and we want to hear what residents envision for this historic space and how it can continue to contribute to the energy and vibrancy of our downtown.”
While the Town emphasizes preserving the building’s historical character and significance, it is also seeking bold, innovative, and unexpected ideas that reflect the evolving needs of the community.
A wide range of potential uses on the table
Officials say the building could serve a mix of community-focused purposes, including space for non-profit organizations, municipal programs, government services, community gathering areas, or local businesses.
The Town has already explored the possibility of converting the building into a dedicated arts centre as part of other projects. However, significant structural modifications, along with site and parking limitations, meant the location was not considered suitable for that specific use. Still, arts, culture, and creative programming are strongly encouraged as part of the broader visioning process.
Community feedback to guide Council decision
Input gathered through the engagement process will play a key role in shaping Council’s decision-making around the potential purchase and future development of the property.
Feedback will be reviewed alongside technical and financial considerations, including building condition assessments and regulatory requirements currently underway as part of the Town’s due diligence.
If the purchase moves forward, development of the building is expected to happen gradually. Service Canada is anticipated to continue operating within part of the facility in the interim, allowing for temporary or phased uses while longer-term plans take shape.
Guided by key community principles
The Town says the visioning process will be rooted in several guiding principles, including accessibility, inclusivity, fiscal responsibility, sustainability, heritage preservation, and downtown revitalization.
Officials also highlight the importance of partnerships, transparency, and alignment with strategic initiatives such as the Downtown Master Plan, ensuring that any future redevelopment supports broader municipal priorities.
Residents encouraged to take part
Municipal officials stress that participation is designed to be simple and accessible, with opportunities for residents to share ideas, learn more about the project, and stay informed as plans evolve.
Residents interested in contributing can learn more, submit ideas, and sign up for updates through the Town’s engagement platform at Engage Collingwood Federal Building Project.
