Council Salary Rising To Compensate for New Federal Tax Rules

Wasaga Council Raising Wages To Compensate for Lack of Tax Exemption

Wasaga Beach council voted to give themselves a raise, but only because the feds changed the rules.

Time was, the Ontario Municipal Act permitted elected officials to receive one third of their wage as tax free, but new federal tax regulations that took effect January 1st eliminated that exemption.

Wasaga Council voted to increase its gross salary to make sure members of council get the same amount they used to before the federal changes.

The new salaries retroactively took effect January 1st.
