Driver charged after child found riding in recliner chair: SSP

Child Recliner Chair

A driver is facing charges after South Simcoe police found a child riding in a recliner chair.

Officers recently conducted a traffic stop at Simcoe Road and Canal Road in Bradford after they say a vehicle didn't stop at a 4-way stop intersection.

"The driver had two children aged 7 and 8 inside the van," police said. "One of the children was riding in a recliner chair in the back."

The driver was charged with several offences including:

  • Disobey stop sign - fail to stop
  • Drive while passenger under 16 fail to occupy position with seatbelt
  • Drive while passenger not properly secured.

"This incident serves as a reminder to all drivers. To be safely protected in a vehicle, children must be properly secured in a child car seat, booster seat or seatbelt, depending on their height, weight and/or age," police added.

"Drivers are responsible for ensuring that all passengers under 16 years of age are properly buckled into a seatbelt, child car seat or booster seat. In Ontario, all drivers must use proper child car seats and booster seats when transporting young children."
