Five people including one from Barrie, Midhurst charged in York Region carjacking

Police say Mercedes was hit from behind by suspect vehicle and then stolen

A carjacking early Thursday in Whitchurch-Stouffville has resulted in five people being charged by York Regional Police (YRP) including two 20-year-olds, a man from Barrie and a woman from Midhurst.

Police say around 1:45 a.m. on Thursday they received a report of a carjacking in the area of Stouffville Road and Highway 404.

"The victim was driving his Mercedes G-Wagon when he was rear-ended by a suspect vehicle. The suspects approached the victim, demanded his keys and cell phone, then fled in his Mercedes," police said in a news release on Thursday.

The YRP chopper was able to locate the vehicle and began to monitor both the stolen Mercedes and another vehicle operated by the suspects. Officers on the ground, along with the Emergency Response Unit, stopped the vehicles and took the suspects into custody.

The other suspects are from Vaughan, Brampton and St. John's, Newfoundland.

They have been charged with the following:

  • robbery
  • disguise with intent
  • possession of property obtained by crime

Police urge anyone with information or anyone with video footage from this incident to please come
forward.
