Former boyfriend of Elnaz Hajtamiri charged with first-degree murder: OPP

’She is alive’: Sister of abducted woman says family is still hopeful one year later

A major development in the case of Elnaz Hajtamiri, who disappeared nearly two years ago from a relative's home in Wasaga Beach.

Her former boyfriend has had a charge of kidnaping upgraded to first-degree murder.

The confirmation was provided to Barrie 360 in an email from OPP Strategic Communications Officer Agata Czajkowski.

She said the Crown Attorney had upgraded the charge against the suspect by way of direct indictment.

Police have said that on January 12, 2022, three masked men with fake police gear entered the home where Hajtamiri was staying and dragged her into a Lexus SUV that fled the scene.

The ex-boyfriend, who is from Quebec, is already up on charges of attempted murder and attempted kidnapping in connection with a prior assault on Hajtamiri.

Several individuals have also been charged in connection with a separate incident in which the 37-year-old woman was allegedly attacked with a frying pan in an underground parking garage in Richmond Hill on Dec 20, 2021.

York Regional Police and Ontario Provincial Police continue to offer a $100,000 reward for information on Hajtamiri's whereabouts.
