Former Rail Line To Serve As Active Transportation Corridor

County Converting 38km of Barrie Collingwood Railway to Walking Trail

A section of the former Barrie Collingwood Railway could find new life as a recreational trail.

The County of Simcoe scooped up about 38km of the former railway, from the boundary of Collingwood to Utopia in Essa Township, back in 2017. This month, County Council voted to approve switching it into a multi-use recreational trail.

Funding for the project will be included in the 2020 budget, along with the required studies and detail designs. It will remain as a transportation corridor, but as it will no longer serve as a rail corridor, the County has to follow up with the Canada Transportation Act to have the rails and road signals removed.

Further public consultation will happen as the project unfolds.
