In a landmark moment for South Georgian Bay, Collingwood General and Marine Hospital (CGMH) has officially opened its first Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) suite—bringing advanced diagnostic care closer to home for thousands of residents.
Located on the hospital’s newly renovated lower level, the 2,000-square-foot MRI suite features cutting-edge technology designed for speed, precision, and patient comfort. The launch marks a significant step forward in CGMH’s commitment to enhancing healthcare access and reducing wait times across the region.
"This state-of-the-art technology delivers exceptional image quality, speed, and efficiency, all within a patient-friendly design," said Michael Lacroix, CGMH President and CEO. "It reflects our ongoing commitment to investing in advanced tools that enhance patient care and create capacity to support both our clinical teams and the communities we serve."
A Community Effort Backed by Provincial Support
The new MRI program was made possible through funding from the provincial government, part of a broader initiative to expand MRI access across Ontario. CGMH also credits the CGMH Foundation and the local community for raising over $5 million, a testament to the region’s dedication to modernizing healthcare.
First Patient Scanned: A Five-Month Head Start
Local resident Jen Lauriault became the first patient scanned using the new MRI machine.
“Thanks to this advancement, I was able to have my appointment five months earlier than originally scheduled - without the added stress of leaving my community. It’s truly a game-changer for access to local healthcare.”
5,500 Scans Annually: A New Era for Diagnostics
According to Dr. Murray Miller, CGMH’s Chief of Radiology, the hospital expects to perform 5,500 MRI scans annually, significantly reducing regional wait times and enabling faster diagnoses.
Building the Hospital of Tomorrow
The MRI launch is part of CGMH’s broader vision to build a future-ready hospital—one that blends government investment, community philanthropy, and collaborative leadership to meet today’s healthcare needs and prepare for tomorrow’s.
