Giving Tuesday kicks off the “Opening day of the giving season”

“We have two days that are good for the economy. Now we have a day that is good for the community too.”

November 30 is Giving Tuesday and there are plenty of ways to help like donating to a worthy cause, volunteering at a local charity, or just committing to a few small acts of kindness throughout the day.

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement, taking place each year after Black Friday. It’s a time when charities, companies and individuals join together and rally for favourite causes. In the same way that retailers take part in Black Friday, the giving community comes together today.

Giving Tuesday harnesses the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities; it provides a platform for them to encourage the donation of time, resources and talents to address local challenges.

It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partners – nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses and corporations, as well as families and individuals – to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness. Across Canada and around the world, it unites communities by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another.

So, how can you be part of this awesome day? Well, the first and most obvious way is by heading over to the Giving Tuesday Website and joining their community. Another way is by donating or volunteering at a local charity like Gilda’s Club Simcoe Muskoka, the Barrie Food Bank, the Women and Children’s Shelter of Barrie, or any of your favourite local non-profits.

The final and simplest way is by just performing a few acts of kindness throughout the day. Grab somebody’s coffee order for them at the shop, hold a few doors open, or, with all the white stuff falling from the sky, clear off a few snowy cars!
