Guelph company developing test for COVID-19 that could yield results in 20 minutes

Trials could begin within three months

An Ontario company is working on a palm-sized device that can detect if someone is infected with COVID-19 in 20 minutes.

It’s a saliva-based test that Deep Biologics of Guelph says could have practical applications at airports, schools and in the workplace.

No new cases of COVID-19 in Simcoe or Muskoka according to local health unit Wednesday

The current test in Canada means having a long swab inserted into the back of a patient’s throat or through their nose. Samples are taken to a lab for testing, and results can take a few days.

This new test eliminates the need for the lab.

Deep Biologics hopes to begin clinical testing within three months.

Use of the device would require Health Canada approval.
