Historic first as South Simcoe Police Service raises Pride flags at North and South Division

"It's about taking action," says SSPS Police Chief Andrew Fletcher

The Pride flag is blowing in the wind at the North (Innisfil) and South (Bradford West Gwillimury) Divisions of the South Simcoe Police Service (SSPS).

The flag raising on Wednesday was a historic first for the SSPS.

The flag-raising ceremonies were organized by the service’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee

“It’s about taking action. More than just words, more than just statements,” Chief Andrew Fletcher said. “This is a historic event for the South Simcoe Police Service as we raise the Pride flag today and I’m so very proud of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee that has led the charge on this initiative. We want to recognize and celebrate the diversity within our organization and within our community. But it really goes beyond that for us to embrace equity and to promote inclusiveness and respect for all.”

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee member Cliff Aguiar also spoke at the event.

“Today is seemingly another day in human history yet it’s also one of change and evolution for members of the South Simcoe Police Service. Today we stand united in showcasing the diversification, not only within our communities but also within the South Simcoe Police Service. Today is about acceptance. Today is about recognition not only for those who fought the fight but also for our allies who stand with us.”
