“We’re not just playing ball, we’re tackling hunger!” says Sharon Palmer Executive Director of Barrie Food Bank.
The second annual 'Home Runs for the Hungry' baseball game will be held on Saturday, May 4th at Vintage Throne Stadium. Barrie Baycats will be playing with a cadre of local celebrity guest players from the world of sports, media, and community leaders.
Ward 2 Councilor Craig Nixon and Baycats President Josh Matlow have been instrumental in organizing this fundraiser to support the Food Bank. Tickets are just $10, and kids are free, so come out and watch the antics that are bound to happen when you mix Baycats past and present, with top-notch athletes from other sports, and some local personalities with a passion to help reduce hunger in Barrie. There will be a 50/50, door prizes, and a best costume prize for those who show up in their Star Wars costume. After all - it is May the Fourth!

Gary “Big Daddy” Goodridge, (former UFC mixed martial arts champ and Super Heavyweight Boxing Champ), Mark Dilley (CASCAR and NASCAR), and Charlie Beatty (World Cup Skier and Snowboarder) are a few of the sports celebs who will be stepping up to bat. CTV weatherman KC Colby and news anchors Sarah Freemark and Dana Roberts will be swinging for the fences. Local dignitaries including Mayor Nutall, Hon. Andrea Khanjin, Hon. John Brassard, Councilors Sergio Morales & Anne Marie Kungl, Special Olympian Kyle Shuttleworth, Ty “The Poetess” Thomas and Kat Chabot with the Simcoe Youth Choir will all be participating. Josh Matlow, president of the Barrie Baycats says the players are looking forward to having some fun on the field.
“We will have Baycats on both teams which will make for some good entertainment. The players are competitive, and we’ll just have to see what happens when we split them up and mix in the local celebs and athletes from other sports!”
Tickets are on sale here. The rain date is Sunday, May 5th.
Attendees are asked to bring a food donation for a chance to win a special door prize.
