A new hovercraft service plans to take passengers between Toronto and the Niagara Region in just 30 minutes.

Hoverlink Ontario Inc. says the service, which is the first of its kind in North America, is slated to begin next summer.

Passengers on the hovercraft service will travel across Lake Ontario between Ontario Place in downtown Toronto and Port Weller in St. Catharines, Ont., a trip that can take about two hours by car or train.

The company says the service will be available all year and will complete 48 rides each day, carrying up to 180 passengers on each trip.

The project, which has been 10-years in the making, hopes to ease traffic congestion along the highway linking the communities.

The company says the hovercraft will leave virtually no wake and not harm the shorelines.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 14, 2022.
