Impaired driving charges laid after two Sunday daytime crashes in Tiny and Midland

Minor injuries in both collisions

A young driver was lucky to escape with minor injuries after the vehicle they were driving struck several trees in Awenda Provincial Park in Tiny Township.

Southern Georgian Bay OPP were called around 10:30 Sunday morning about a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. After slamming into the trees, Tiny Township firefighters had to extricate the lone occupant of the vehicle from the wreck. He was transported to a local hospital.

Officers gathered evidence at the collision scene and charged the youth, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, with impaired driving.

Then around 4:30 Sunday afternoon, a car and large flatbed truck collided on Simcoe Road 93 in Midland. A witness alerted police and the vehicles were located on Harbourview Drive. While investigating the collision, the officers noted signs of impairment from the truck driver and he was arrested. A search of the vehicle turned up a quantity of marijuana and alcohol. The driver was transported to the detachment for breath samples.

As a result, a 53-year-old Sprinwater Township man was charged with:

  • operation while impaired
  • operation while over 80 milligrams
  • cannabis readily available to the driver
  • careless driving

The man's driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days and the vehicle has been impounded for seven days.
