Construction is underway on the redevelopment of the IOOF Seniors Home on Brooks Street in Barrie, where 130 new long-term care beds are being added to the community.

The project, funded through the Ontario government's Capital Funding Program, includes renovations to the existing building plus a new addition, creating a modern, 226-bed home.

Long-Term Care Minister Natalia Kusendova-Bashta said the government is improving long-term care by bulding more homes, hiring more staff and making historic investments to protect families and their loved ones.

"Today marks a significant milestone for Barrie. Once construction is complete, 130 residents will have a new home where they can receive the care they need, when they need it," Kusendova-Bashta was quoted in a media release.

The renovation and new addition to the existing building will deliver 64 new and 66 upgraded long-term care beds to create a 226-bed home.

The expanded home will be organized into eight "resident home areas," giving groups of up to 32 people their own dining and activity spaces, lounges, and bedrooms.

The modernized home will be completed in two phases: spring 2028 and phase two in early 2029.

"This endeavour not only reflects our commitment to enhancing long-term care services but also highlights our dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive community," stated Garry C. Hopkins, CEO of IOOF Seniors Home.

The redeveloped facility will also be part of a larger campus of care, connecting residents with health services like physiotherapy, imaging, and programs for those with chronic or cognitive conditions.
