A weekend incident involving a personal watercraft on the Indian River, just west of Mirror Lake, in Port Carling has claimed the life of a 23-year-old Brampton man.

Around 6 p.m. on Saturday, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Muskoka paramedics and the Muskoka Lakes Township fire department responded to Bailey Street where witnesses reported a man had been operating a jet ski and was ejected into the water while doing a manoeuvre and failed to resurface.

OPP say a search began and the man was brought to shore, though life-saving efforts were unsuccessful.

"If you are enjoying the lakes and rivers in Muskoka, any type of vessel, this summer, please remember that life-jackets must be worn in order to be effective. Ensure that you have the necessary safety equipment on board and always share your plan with a person on land so that if you encounter trouble, that information will be available to emergency services," police said in a news release on Monday.

- This is a corrected story. OPP originally stated that the death occurred on Mirror Lake but later posted that it happened on the Indian River, just west of Mirror Lake.
