Automation, Efficiencies Cited As Some Reasons For Layoffs
Seventy People at two local casinos will receive layoff notices, as parent company Gateway Casinos preps for expansion.
A Gateway representative tells Barrie 360 the majority of the layoffs will affect Casino Rama, the rest at its Georgian Downs location in Innisfil.
After detailed analysis of the central gaming market and current operations, Gateway has made the difficult decision to reduce staff levels at its two gaming site locations in central Ontario. The reasons for these staff adjustments include reduced hours of operation at the dining outlets, investments in new technology (new security and surveillance systems, Gaming Management System, other automation), and other basic business efficiencies.

The company cites growth in the Ontario market as job creators in other areas however, with a gaming centre slated for Wasaga Beach in the near future. Gateway Casinos says those staff impacted by the “operational changes” are encouraged to apply for employment at the Wasaga Beach location or other planned developments in London, Chatham-Kent, North Bay, Kenora, or Sudbury.
