Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons
Step back in time at this recreated 17th-century mission. Walk through historic buildings, explore daily life as it was for the French Jesuits and Indigenous people, and immerse yourself in hands-on activities.
The site usually closes after Thanksgiving weekend, so fall is your last chance to take in the history before their popular First Light event kicks off later in the season.
Discovery Harbour
Located on Penetanguishene Bay, Discovery Harbour brings the War of 1812 to life. Explore tall ships, military barracks, and the historic dockyard while learning about early naval life. With fall colours as your backdrop, it’s an especially scenic visit before the site closes in October.
As the season winds down, the site transforms for its popular Pumpkinferno event, where thousands of hand-carved glowing pumpkins line the historic grounds. It’s a magical way to experience the harbour before it settles into winter.
Martyrs’ Shrine
Just across the highway from Sainte-Marie, the Martyrs’ Shrine is a peaceful and spiritual spot with stunning views over Georgian Bay. The shrine typically closes in mid-October, making it a great early-fall visit before it reopens in the spring.
Horseshoe Adventure Park (Oro-Medonte)
If you’re looking for a thrill before winter, Horseshoe Adventure Park is the place to go. From summer tubing down winding water slopes to treetop trekking and ziplining adventures, there’s something for every level of adrenaline. Once ski season begins, these summer activities shut down, so fall is your last chance to experience the park in all its action-packed glory.
Simcoe County Museum (Minesing)
This living history site includes heritage buildings, a recreated main street, and lots of hands-on exhibits. It winds down outdoor programming once the colder weather sets in, so fall is the perfect time for a last stroll through the heritage village before winter.
Chappell Farms (Barrie)
Chappell Farms is a go-to destination for kids and families throughout the warmer months, with farm animals, play areas, and plenty of outdoor fun. In the fall, it adds a seasonal twist with pumpkins and autumn-themed activities. After October, the farm shuts its gates until spring, so fall is your last opportunity to enjoy this family-friendly spot.
Rounds Ranch (Elmvale)
A local favourite for families, Rounds Ranch combines a summer fun park with a petting zoo, pony rides, and a range of outdoor activities. As the season winds down, the ranch transitions into its fall offerings, including a corn maze and pumpkin patch. After October, the gates close until spring, making autumn the perfect time for a final visit.
Scenic Caves Nature Adventures (Collingwood/Blue Mountain area)
Just outside Simcoe’s western edge but a major draw for the region in the Scenic Caves with caves, a suspension bridge, and zip lines that close in late fall. If you’ve been meaning to visit, September and October are your window.
Make the Most of the Season
These local gems are best enjoyed before the frost sets in and their doors temporarily close. Whether you’re after history, nature, or just a day out with the family, now’s the time to go. Grab a sweater, pack your camera, and enjoy these experiences before they’re gone for the year.
