Local school board deems “What a Wonderful World” greatest song of all time

March Madness-style competition whittled down list of 80 songs

A March Madness-style competition at the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB) has chosen “What a Wonderful World” to be the greatest song of all time.

The notion came to SMCDSB Communications Assistant Patricia Oliveira to hold an elimination tournament as a means of reconnecting co-workers. “There’s a great feeling of community and family in this building that has been missing since we moved to work-from-home status,” she told Barrie 360. “This was just my way to bring us all back together and offer a distraction from all the other, non-musical noise!”

Oliveira invited central board staff to submit their top three favourite songs of all time. Each tune was pitted against a random opponent and votes were cast on the victor. A list of 80 hit songs was whittled down to just two: “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong versus “Bobcaygeon” by The Tragically Hip.

The votes were cast, the ballots counted… Armstrong’s 1967 classic won out.

You can listen to all songs nominated for the contest via a Youtube playlist crafted by the school board.
