Man charged in Barrie spray painting spree

"Senseless acts of mischief," say police

Barrie police charged a man after seven incidents where black spray paint was used to tag locations including the Cenotaph at Memorial Square downtown and Military Heritage Park on Lakeshore Drive.

In a news release on Thursday, police said the “senseless acts of mischief” happened between March 11 and April 17, 2023.

Other targeted places included a business on Veterans Drive, new home construction sites on Mapleview Drive East, a federal government building on Owen Street and an elementary school on Prince William Way.

According to police, the most recent arrest happened on Wednesday night when the suspect went to Barrie Police Headquarters to retrieve his vehicle that police had seized as a result of the initial investigation.

A 43-year-old from Barrie has been charged with five counts of mischief over $5,000 and two counts of mischief relating to war memorials.

Police thank the community for their assistance in obtaining information that assisted them with these investigations.
