Man charged in death of Toronto toddler who ate poison-laced cereal

Family of the child and the accused are known to each other

Toronto Police are not sure yet if it was intentional or accidental, but they have charged a 45-year-old man in the death of a three-year-old girl they say was poisoned during a sleepover in early March.

They say Bernice Nantanda Wamala and another child became ill after eating breakfast cereal. The second child recovered after a long hospital stay

Police believe the accused obtained a controlled substance from his work and placed it into the cereal.

The substance was identified through an autopsy but police have not said what it was.

The family of the child and the accused are known to each other.
