The City of Barrie is extending the full road closure at McKay Road East between Veteran’s Drive and Huronia Road until the end of the year. The closure is required as part of the McKay Road East Watermain & Trunk Sanitary Sewer project.

The original plan was to reopen the road on January 23, 2026, and then close the road again shortly after. However, the project team identified efficiencies in the schedule that allow Stage 1 and Stage 2 works to proceed concurrently on McKay Road East. As a result, the full road closure on McKay Road must be extended. Maintaining a continuous closure allows the work to be completed safely and efficiently, while avoiding repeated disruptions to motorists, pedestrians, and nearby residents.

This project supports planned growth and essential infrastructure upgrades in the area, including the installation of a new watermain on McKay Road East (east to west of Highway 400) and a new trunk sanitary sewer between Highway 400 and Huronia Road. Overall construction for the project is expected to be completed by spring 2028.

Local traffic will continue to be permitted from Veteran’s Drive up to the active work zone. Detour routes and signage will remain in place to guide motorists around the closure. Residents are reminded that any access of the construction zone and road closure limits is strictly prohibited, including snowmobiling.

Detours remain as follows:

  • McKay Road West – Veteran’s Drive – Mapleview Drive West – Huronia Road – McKay Road East
  • McKay Road East – Huronia Road – Innisfil Beach Road – Veteran’s Drive – McKay Road West

Barrie Transit routes and schedules will not be affected; more information can be accessed from MyRideBarrie.ca/news.
