Spider-Man: No Way Home has bigger opening weekend than first thought

Third place just wasn't good enough.
Opening Weekend

While it was originally thought to have held the third-place position, a new tally for opening weekend sales has pushed Spider-Man: No Way Home one spot higher.

With the incredible amount of buzz circling the film, it's no surprise just how well it did at the box office, even with Omicron variant fears in the air. They may have gotten very lucky though, seeing as capacity limits went into effect (in Ontario at least) just after their opening weekend.

The original box office tally had No Way Home taking the third=place spot just $4 million shy of Avengers: Infinity War, however, a new update to the numbers means the film actually clinched the second-place spot with a $260 million opening weekend. Avengers: Endgame still sits comfortably in first place with a whopping $357 million. This is also the first movie since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to make over $100 million in its opening weekend.

With capacity limits firmly in place over the holidays, numbers for the film will certainly slow down, but it's hard to think Sony isn't happy with how this first weekend turned out.

If you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favour and snag a ticket as soon as possible. It doesn't disappoint and certainly earns the hype surrounding it.

There's still one more big movie coming before the end of the year and that is The Matrix Resurrections, but we think it's safe to say Spider-Man will hold its spot. We love you Keanu, but No Way Home is a tough act to follow.
