Nuttall won’t stand for re-election this fall

Family comes first

Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte MP Alex Nuttall spent some quality time with his family over the Christmas break from Parliament Hill.

“For me, there’s been some sort of life changing things which are named Caleb and Annabella…they’re five and three…and, you know, I was signing up to coach her soccer this summer and realized I can’t do that if I continue with my current lifestyle.”

So, Nuttall has stepped down from his post in the Conservative Shadow Cabinet and will serve out the remainder of his term as MP, but won’t be seeking re-election this fall.

That said, he hasn’t ruled out returning to politics one day. He calls this a break; to give him time to focus on his family.

He says Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer understood his decision, “He said, ‘if there’s one reason, Alex, that is a good reason to leave the federal calling it is for a family calling.’ Having that type of relationship and that type of support – almost like a family dynamic in the party – is pretty amazing.”

Nuttall was elected MP in 2015. Prior to that, he ran unsuccessfully to become the provincial Conservative candidate for the then-riding of Barrie. He also served on Barrie City Council from 2006 until 2014.

But what he’s been most proud of is his involvement with the back-to-school program that gives knapsacks filled with school supplies to kids who live in social housing – as he did – as well as to those living on reserves and others with mental health issues. “To get the letters back, from those kids or those parents saying ‘without this, I don’t know what I would have done’ that’s where there was the most value for me, because it felt like pay-it-forward.”
