News release - Southern Georgian Bay OPP
With the recent weather trend not displaying much of what residents of North Simcoe normally expect, members of the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment and our safety partners offer up a few good reminders.
Plan for your ride home from that long awaited New Years' Eve party! Members of MADD Canada, Arrive Alive and the Safe and Sober Committee of North Simcoe constantly share good messages for drivers throughout the year to make the right choice before getting behind the wheel. Never Drive Impaired!
Boaters, as odd as it sounds, contractors and some cottagers are still taking to the waterways to finish end of year projects or squeeze a few more nights in at the cottage using watercraft. Please remember to wear your lifejacket as the grime reality is that "self rescue" will be your only way to safety as Emergency Services have limited equipment available as we merge into the freeze up period whenever that may be!
For those who gather to see the first grain boat of 2024 come into Midland harbour, that should occur near January 2, 2024, with no ice in sight at this time.
ATV operators are reminded that wearing all of your required safety equipment is a necessary, especially with the extra slippery surfaces you may encounter with the recent and current rain and ground thawing temperatures. Please be respectful of closed OFATV, OFSC trail systems and any other trails that landowners have marked as closed or with no trespassing signs.
Motorcyclists, yes, they are out there, watch for them and be cautious near them.
Snowmobilers, you have time to double check your machine and safety equipment, required permits and please wait until the OFSC trail system opens sometime in 2024.
In closing as we move toward and into 2024, no matter what you operate, drive or ride, please Never Drive Impaired.
Please take a moment and view the following YouTube video from MADD Canada Bottles LIGHTPOST - YouTube and let's all have a safe 2024.
Educating the public about safe driving, boating and ORV practices with our community safety partners is a priority, if you see a possible impaired operator on our roadways, waterways or trails please "Make the Call" and dial 911 as impaired driving never ends well, please make a plan to get home safely.
