OPP promoting safe driving habits as collisions, traffic deaths rise

OPP promoting safe driving habits has collisions/traffic deaths rise

Another weekend upon us, and Ontario provincial Police are hoping you will make it a safe one, noting 41 fatal collisions in Central Region this year, compared to 23 at this time last year.

Among them, seven motorcyclists have died, up from three last year.

Speed, inattention, impairment, and non-use of seatbelts continue to be the highest risk factors.

OPP Chief Superintendent Dwight Peer urges everyone to drive like lives depend on it … because they do.

"I am asking for your help to stop any more tragic and unnecessary loss of life on our roads. Our officers are actively patrolling to ensure safe driving behaviour. Always keep your head on a swivel and remain vigilant for everything."

There have been 7,565 collisions on OPP-patrolled roads this year.

Sharing the road safely is every driver's responsibility, says the OPP, it cannot be overstated when motorcyclists, cyclists, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users are involved.
