Orillia OPP use app to locate injured snowmobiler

Ontario Provincial Police used the What3Words app, a geocode mapping system, to help locate and rescue an injured snowmobiler.

Around 5 p.m. on Jan. 8, Orillia OPP responded to an emergency call about an injured snowmobiler who had been in a collision on Lake Couchiching. The driver was unable to say exactly where he was and this slowed emergency responders trying to find his location.

Staff at the OPP Provincial Communications Centre (PCC) were able to use What3Words by texting a link to the app to the driver, who then used it to pinpoint his location. Those three words were then communicated back to the PCC, and staff were able to direct emergency services to the collision site.

The driver was located and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
