Provincial police say a 62-year-old Penetanguishene man died Sunday evening after he was ejected from a snowmobile while riding on the ice on Georgian Bay near Beausoleil Island.
Around 7:15 p.m, emergency crews were called to the incident, about 2.7 kilometres from shore, near the southern tip of Beausoleil Island, where a snowmobiler lost control and was ejected onto the ice.
Police say an accompanying rider remained with the injured person and contacted emergency services.
Police, firefighters and paramedics arrived on scene, as did an OPP helicopter. Police say a civilian air boat was used to bring the victim to shore, and paramedics performed life-saving measures, transporting him to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, police added.
Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has information that could assist investigators is asked to contact the Southern Georgian Bay OPP 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1‑800‑222‑TIPS (8477).
"As warmer spring temperatures continue, ice conditions become increasingly unpredictable and unsafe. The OPP reminds all residents and visitors that ice, including areas that may appear solid, can quickly deteriorate. Snowmobilers, anglers, and anyone considering travelling onto frozen waterways are strong advised to stay off the ice entirely at this time," police said in a news release.
